Release Paper and release liner are closely related terms, but they are not always interchangeable. Release paper specifically refers to paper carrying a release coating. Release liner is the broader functional term for the removable backing that protects an adhesive, and it may be made from paper or plastic film.
This distinction matters when buyers compare material thickness, strength, transparency, moisture resistance, die-cutting performance, and recycling requirements.
Release paper uses a paper substrate such as glassine, kraft, or another coated base. Its surface is treated to prevent permanent adhesion and provide a controlled peel.

Film liners can provide a smooth surface, high tear resistance, controlled thickness, and good dimensional stability. Transparent film may also help with optical inspection or alignment.

The coating type, coating side, release level, thickness, width, and roll format should also be stated.
Paper and film liners can differ in stiffness, caliper consistency, tear behavior, transparency, moisture response, and recycling pathway. The adhesive, die-cutting method, dispensing speed, and final product determine which properties matter most.
A thick paper liner may provide good handling stiffness but increase roll diameter. A thin film liner can reduce thickness but may require different tension settings. A glassine liner may support high-speed label converting, while a kraft-based release paper may better suit certain industrial adhesive products.
Whether the carrier is paper or film, the release coating must interact correctly with the adhesive. Silicone systems are common because they provide stable release across many pressure-sensitive adhesives.
Coating uniformity and curing influence how consistently the adhesive separates. Poor cure may lead to silicone transfer, unstable release, or contamination. Uneven coating can produce different peel forces across the web.
A physical trial with the intended adhesive is more reliable than choosing a liner by appearance alone.
