What Is A Packing Paper?

Packing paper is paper used to wrap products, separate surfaces, fill empty carton space, reduce movement, or add a protective layer during storage and transportation. The term may refer to plain Kraft Paper, white wrapping paper, tissue-like sheets, coated paper, laminated paper, or another grade selected for a specific packing task.

Packing Paper Performs More Than One Job

The most familiar use is wrapping. Paper placed around a product helps reduce direct contact with dust, carton surfaces, nearby components, and minor abrasion.

Packing paper can also be crumpled and placed inside a carton. This fills unused space and limits movement during handling. The amount required depends on carton size, product weight, and the force expected during transportation.

Flat sheets may be inserted between stacked products. This interleaving function is useful for separating surfaces, reducing rubbing, and making products easier to remove from a carton.

Paper can also improve presentation. A carefully wrapped product creates a different unboxing experience from an item placed directly into a shipping box.

Is Packing Paper the Same as Kraft Paper?

Kraft paper is one of the most widely used types of packing paper, but the two terms are not identical. Packing paper describes the application, while kraft describes a paper category and manufacturing approach.

Brown kraft paper is valued for its natural appearance and practical strength. White kraft paper can provide a cleaner presentation while retaining useful wrapping properties.

Other packing papers may be chosen when kraft alone does not provide the necessary function. Laminated paper may improve moisture resistance, while acid-free paper may be selected for sensitive stored items.

The right paper must match the product rather than simply follow the most familiar market name.

What Specifications Affect Performance?

Grammage influences weight, flexibility, opacity, and strength. Lightweight paper folds easily and suits delicate wrapping, while heavier paper offers more resistance to puncture and tearing.

Thickness and grammage are related but not interchangeable. Coatings, fiber structure, and density can produce different thicknesses at the same nominal weight.

  • Fiber and recycled content requirements

How Is Packing Paper Used Correctly?

For surface protection, the paper should cover the contact areas and remain in position while the item is placed in the carton. Sharp corners may require additional layers or corner protection.

For void filling, the paper should be crumpled firmly enough to resist product movement. Loosely placed sheets can collapse during vibration and leave the item unsupported.

Packing paper should not be expected to protect highly fragile goods by itself. Glass, electronics, and precision products may require molded inserts, bubble cushioning, corrugated partitions, or foam alongside paper.

Trial packing is the best way to determine paper consumption. Using too little may cause damage, while excessive filling increases material and shipping costs.

Can Packing Paper Be Customized?

Paper can be supplied in different colors, widths, grammages, roll lengths, sheet sizes, coatings, and laminated structures. Printing can also support brand presentation, handling instructions, or product identification when the selected grade is suitable.
