What Is Packaging Paper Called?

2026-08-05

Packaging paper is a broad term for paper used to wrap, separate, cushion, protect, label, seal, or present products. Its specific name usually comes from the raw material, surface treatment, converting process, or intended application, such as Kraft Paper, wrapping paper, laminated paper, Food Paper, Release Paper, or rust-proof paper.

Why Is There No Single Name?

The term “packaging paper” describes a function rather than one fixed material. Two papers may look similar but behave differently because they have different fiber compositions, grammages, coatings, moisture resistance, release properties, or strength levels.

A buyer asking only for packaging paper may receive an unsuitable recommendation. The supplier needs to know whether the paper will wrap a product, contact food, separate adhesive material, protect metal, form a bag, or run through automated equipment.

The same paper name can also cover several grades. Kraft paper, for example, may be brown or white, coated or uncoated, virgin or recycled, lightweight or heavy, and supplied as sheets or rolls.

Common Names Used in the Market

Kraft paper is commonly used for wrapping, bags, interleaving, and general industrial packaging. Its strength and natural appearance make it suitable for both protective and presentation purposes.

Wrapping paper is a general name for paper placed around products. It may include kraft paper, white paper, printed paper, tissue-like paper, or specialty protective paper.

Laminated paper combines a paper base with another layer to improve moisture resistance, heat-sealing behavior, grease resistance, or barrier performance. The exact structure should be identified rather than described only as laminated paper.

Release paper has a treated surface designed to separate cleanly from adhesives or sticky materials. It is widely used with labels, tapes, protective films, and industrial adhesive products.

Rust-proof paper is developed for selected metal-packaging applications. Its use conditions, metal compatibility, protection period, sealing method, and storage environment should be evaluated before ordering.

How Should Buyers Describe the Required Paper?

An effective inquiry should state what the paper must do. Instead of requesting “one roll of packing paper,” provide the following information:

  • Product being packed

  • Direct or indirect product contact

  • Required grammage

  • Roll or sheet format

  • Width and length

  • Core size

  • Surface treatment

  • Printing requirement

  • Moisture or grease resistance

  • Heat-sealing requirement

  • Packing-machine conditions

  • Estimated order volume

A physical sample is useful when the current material performs well but its exact specification is unknown. Basic testing can then help identify weight, thickness, width, coating, and surface behavior.

Does Paper Format Change Its Name?

Sheets are convenient for manual wrapping, interleaving, and fixed-size packaging. Rolls are more suitable for continuous converting, automatic feeding, slitting, printing, laminating, or high-volume packing.

The material itself may remain the same, but purchasing specifications change. Roll diameter, core diameter,, core diameter, winding tension, edge quality, and splice control become important when paper runs through machinery.

Poorly wound rolls can telescope, wrinkle, or feed unevenly. Accurate slitting and stable winding are therefore part of paper quality, not merely transport details.

Why Is Supplier Communication Important?

Packaging failures often begin with incomplete descriptions. A general paper name does not reveal whether the material needs food-contact suitability, low sulfur content, release performance, waterproofing, or long-term metal protection.

As a wholesale packaging paper supplier, we review the end use before confirming the product. Our range covers general wrapping, kraft grades, laminated structures, medical wrapping, food-related paper, release liners, rust-prevention paper, label materials, and Paper Strapping.

Our factory integrates production, processing, warehousing, and distribution. We can also discuss custom width, roll length, slitting, coating, lamination, packaging, and export labeling for wholesale orders.

Get the Correct Paper Name and Specification

Tell us what you are packaging, how the paper will be used, and whether it will contact food, adhesive, metal, or medical products. Our team can identify the relevant paper category and prepare a wholesale quotation with a clearer technical specification.
