PE and PLA laminated paper both use a thin polymer layer to improve the barrier performance of paper, but they differ in raw material origin, heat response, end-of-life options and commercial cost. PE is a conventional petroleum-based polymer with mature processing and broad availability. “Bio-based,” however, does not automatically mean that a package will break down in a garden, landfill or natural environment. Many PLA structures require controlled industrial-composting conditions. Local collection and processing infrastructure therefore determines whether the environmental benefit can be realized.

PLA may also soften at lower temperatures than some conventional plastics unless a heat-resistant formulation is used. This makes temperature testing important for hot beverages, ovens, microwaves and high-temperature filling.

Which Option Costs More?

PLA laminated paper commonly carries a higher material cost because its resin market, production scale and converting requirements are less mature than those of PE. The final difference varies according to coating weight, paper grade, order volume, certification, printing and supply conditions.
