Coated paper has a material applied directly to its surface, while laminated paper is generally bonded to another distinct layer such as PE film, plastic film, or foil. Coating often changes printability, gloss, release behavior, or barrier performance; lamination creates a composite structure with the physical properties of two or more materials.
The terms sometimes overlap in everyday purchasing. PE coated paper, for example, may be called PE laminated paper when the buyer is mainly referring to the finished paper-and-polyethylene structure. A technical specification should identify the actual process and layer construction.

Coated paper is produced by applying a material to one or both sides of a paper substrate. Pigment-coated printing paper is designed to create a smoother printing surface. Silicone-coated Release Paper is engineered to separate from an adhesive at a controlled force. Barrier-coated Food Paper is intended to reduce liquid or grease penetration.
Because these coatings perform different functions, the term “coated paper” is not enough for industrial purchasing. The buyer should identify the coating chemistry and required test performance.
Laminated paper is a composite made by bonding paper to another material. In PE laminated paper, the polymer surface provides moisture and oil resistance while the paper contributes body, flexibility, and handling strength.

Performance depends on the coating or laminated layer rather than the category name. A continuous PE layer can provide strong splash and moisture resistance, while a light print coating may provide very little liquid protection.
Edges, folds, pinholes, and surface damage also affect the result. Even a well-laminated sheet should not be described as fully waterproof without testing the complete converted package.
Pigment-coated printing paper usually provides a surface developed specifically for ink reproduction. PE laminated paper has a less absorbent plastic surface, so it may require compatible ink, surface treatment, and adjusted drying conditions.
Print adhesion should be tested before a bulk order. A smooth appearance immediately after printing does not guarantee resistance to rubbing, folding, or tape removal.
A commercial grade PE laminated paper structure may be preferable when products need a clean, moisture-resistant separation layer. It can help isolate metal, electronic, hardware, or mechanical components from dust, paper fiber, and incidental liquid contact.
Release-coated paper is more appropriate when the material must carry an adhesive and separate at a controlled stage. Plain coated printing paper should not be substituted for either function without testing.

A detailed specification avoids disagreements caused by broad product names and helps maintain repeat-order consistency.
