Foodservice paper containers need a barrier that prevents water, grease or sauce from penetrating the paper. Aqueous coatings, PE or PP layers, and PLA coatings can all provide this function, but they differ in sealing behavior, temperature range, recycling route, commercial availability and cost. Buyers looking for commercial grade foodservice coated paper should match the barrier to the food, holding time and local disposal system.

An aqueous barrier coating is delivered in a water-based dispersion. After application, water evaporates and the remaining components form a protective surface. Formulations can be developed for grease, moisture or heat-seal resistance.
Not every aqueous-coated paper is plastic-free. Some dispersions contain polymer binders, and their repulpability varies. Buyers should request test evidence instead of relying only on the word “water-based.”
Aqueous systems can work well for wraps, trays or selected cups, but resistance must be tested against the actual food. Hot oil, acidic sauces, steam and long delivery times place very different demands on the coating.
PE provides reliable moisture resistance and a broad heat-sealing window. Its mature supply chain makes it a familiar choice for cups, bowls, takeaway boxes and coated Food Paper.
Our PE laminated paper is used in food-packaging applications where waterproof, moisture-resistant and grease-resistant performance is required. Width and thickness can be adjusted to suit the converting process.
The main end-of-life challenge is separating the PE layer from the paper. Actual recycling depends on local collection and mill capabilities.
PP generally tolerates higher temperatures than standard PE and may be considered for food containers exposed to hotter filling or reheating conditions. Its sealing range, stiffness and forming behavior differ from PE, so existing equipment settings cannot always be transferred directly.
Microwave or high-temperature claims require testing of the complete container, including ink, adhesive, seams and lid. Polymer name alone does not prove that the finished package is safe for a particular heating method.
PLA is derived from renewable feedstocks and can support industrially compostable packaging when the entire container meets the applicable certification. It may appeal to markets with established organic-waste collection and commercial composting.
Standard PLA can have a narrower heat-performance window than PE or PP. Modified or crystallized grades may improve heat resistance, but they can change processing conditions and price.
“Compostable” should not be used without considering inks, adhesives, labels and the paper base. Every component must be compatible with the intended certification.
Commercial grade foodservice coated paper should be evaluated against these questions:
Is the food hot, chilled, oily, acidic or water-based?
How long will it remain in the container?
Will the package be refrigerated, frozen or reheated?
Does the container need heat sealing?
What forming speed will be used?
Is printing required on the coated surface?
Which food-contact regulations apply?
Is local recycling or industrial composting available?
What environmental claim will appear on the package?
