Kraft Paper is generally stronger than many ordinary printing and wrapping papers. However, its actual strength depends on fiber composition, basis weight, thickness, moisture level, surface treatment, and the production process.
Lightweight kraft paper is commonly used for gift wrapping, flower packaging, and carton lining. Heavier grades can be used for industrial wrapping, shopping bags, product protection, Paper Strapping, and transport packaging.
Paper strength cannot be judged by thickness alone. Several properties need to be considered:
Tensile strength measures resistance to pulling forces.
Tear resistance shows how easily an existing cut continues to tear.
Burst strength measures resistance to pressure applied to the sheet.
Folding strength reflects performance during repeated bending.
Puncture resistance matters when wrapping products with sharp corners.
Wet strength shows how well the paper performs after contact with moisture.
A paper grade may have good tensile strength but still tear easily from a damaged edge. Buyers should therefore test the paper according to its intended packaging application.
Kraft paper is normally produced from cellulose fibers that retain relatively good length and flexibility. During paper formation, these fibers create a bonded network that gives the sheet its toughness.
Its final performance is influenced by:
Virgin or recycled pulp content
Long-fiber and short-fiber ratio
Fiber refining level
Sheet density
Basis weight
Machine direction
Moisture content
Coating or lamination
Storage conditions
Higher basis weight may improve strength, but it does not automatically guarantee better performance. Uneven fiber formation or poor storage conditions can still weaken the paper.

Before approving a bulk order, test the paper under real operating conditions:
Wrap the actual product.
Fold the paper around corners.
Apply the expected pulling force.
Test both paper directions.
Check its performance in humid conditions.
Test whether printing or coating changes flexibility.
Compare samples taken from different roll positions.
Application testing is more reliable than judging paper only by color or hand feel.
